By trade, I'm an archaeologist, but I am also a struggling writer and small-business owner. I am the co-founder of Broke Guys Productions LLC, a start-up company devoted to writing and selling creative properties such as screenplays, novels, and short stories. We hope to expand into graphic novels/comics, video games, etc. in the future when we are able to pull more artists into our creative fold. My partners and I have finished four feature length screenplays, several short stories, and our first novel. All of these properties are currently being shopped to producers and publishers.

This is a great new site for me to play with as I love to browse a wide variety of artwork. From museums to these digital forums, I find that art opens me to knew ways to see, think, and feel.

Interests
Can anyone out there in the land of DA recommend a freeware alternative to Photoshop for image manipulation?  I'm trying to edit a map insert for our upcoming fantasy novel, and the file is too large to manipulate in MS Paint beyond its b&w layout.  I'm looking for a program that can handle taking this b&w basic map image and layering on enough color and texture to make the map look like its done on leather, pigskin, or even old parchment.  I'd appreciate any recommendations as I'm not normally a photo/image manipulator.

Thanks!
